Cleaning out closets this season? Your gently used clothes, toys, blankets and household goods can do a lot of good right here in Mendocino County. Below are local places that accept physical donations, grouped by who they help, with addresses, drop-off times and what each one actually needs.

A few tips before you load the car

Call ahead when you can. Needs change week to week, and some places are full on certain sizes or items.

Only drop off during donation hours. Bags left outside overnight turn into a cleanup job for small, volunteer-run nonprofits.

And if you want to give something that's always in demand, pick up a pack of new socks, underwear or bras. Youth and homeless programs never seem to have enough.

For furniture, housewares and everyday clothing

Ukiah Senior Center Thrift Store is the go-to for general household donations: clothing, furniture, kitchen items and electronics. Every sale helps fund lunches, rides and outreach for local seniors.

Donations are accepted Monday and Wednesday from 10am to 12:30pm, and you'll want to call ahead for bigger loads. The store itself is open Monday through Saturday, 10am to 4:30pm.

Free clothing closets

These closets give clothes away for free, so whatever you drop off goes straight to someone who needs it.

Dorca's Free Closet takes clothing on Wednesdays from 9 to 11:30am.

151 Cherry St, Ukiah

Happy Thrift, run by the Mendocino County Youth Project, is a free clothing boutique for young people under 25. They're looking for clothing, shoes and accessories like jewelry, belts, scarves and hats. Please skip underwear, single socks or shoes, baby toys and diapers. Drop off during open hours: Thursday 3 to 6pm and Friday 3 to 5pm.

Ukiah High School Clothing Closet helps students who need clothes. Give them a call first to find out what sizes and styles they're short on.

Potter Valley Youth and Community Center Clothes Closet serves all ages, and winter coats and kids' clothes are especially welcome. They also take shoes, blankets and baby items. Call or stop by.

Youth and family programs

The Arbor Youth Resource Center, part of Redwood Community Services, supports young adults making the jump to independence. New or gently used bras, underwear and warm clothing are always accepted. Other needs shift, so call ahead to see what would help most. They're open Monday through Friday, 10am to 5:30pm.

Disaster relief and housing

United Disaster Relief of Northern California helps families rebuild after wildfires, house fires and floods, and it's run entirely by volunteers. They welcome clean linens, working small appliances, housewares, new toys, new kids' clothes, new socks and bras, and gift cards for gas, food or clothing.

Used clothing is limited to kids' sizes, men's big and tall, and women's plus sizes 1X–5X, and only a couple of bags per person. For furniture or mattresses, email them a photo first. Drop-off is Monday through Friday, 10am to 2pm, with after-hours appointments available.

Northern Circle Indian Housing Authority is open weekdays from 8am to 5pm. Give them a call to ask what they're accepting.

Don't forget the animals

That stack of towels too worn for the linen closet? The shelter will put it to good use.

Humane Society for Inland Mendocino County takes blankets, towels, crates, pet food and pet supplies. They're open Wednesday through Friday from 1 to 5pm and weekends from 11am to 3pm.

Adventist Health Ukiah Valley Street Medicine brings care, and often new socks, to people living outside. Call the hospital to ask about donating.
