Asking My Instagram Followers About Their Homes | Q and A | Ukiah Real Estate

by Kasie Gray

No home is perfect so I quizzed my followers on Instagram and asked what their least favorite things are and the things I like the most about their homes. Some of the more specific things like not having a pantry or not having a yard or a dish, you can't open the dishwasher in the oven at the same time. So I'm gonna go over those responses and also my favorite things!

Hi, I'm Kasie Gray, a realtor mom and I love helping first-time sellers buy their dream homes. So today we're going to be talking about what people look for in their dream homes. So in this quiz, the research that I gathered, I asked people how many square feet their house is and how many people live in their house it varies a lot but typically a lot of these people said they had around 2,000 to 2,500 and had three or four people living in their house. The smallest result was 900 square feet with four people but they are adding on 1,500 square feet. So that will be like a whole new house for those people and then I think the biggest with the least amount of people was 3,000 square feet with four people living in the house.

So my next question was, do you feel like your house has enough space? 36 said yes, 31 said no. 21 said I wish I had more, and 11 said I just need less stuff. Then I also asked if people have kids and if those kids share rooms. 29 said that they shared rooms and 68 said that they had their rooms and then three percent said that their kids live in a shed or the garage. Those two answers, the people answered that it was a joke because they don't have kids. It's just, we'll count their three percent.

The biggest issue that I saw when asking people what was wrong with their house, was not enough storage, no pantry, no extra closets, not a garage, no fenced yard, old windows, and things like that. Come to affect your living situation because your house is gonna get hot really fast or really cold really fast people said one bathroom. I literally could not live with one bathroom even if I lived by myself. I don't know if I could live with one bathroom.

A lot of people said that they would love enough strip bedrooms and most of those people said that had kids and have three kids someone said the laundry room shares a wall with a baby's crib and my laundry room shares a wall with my baby's room but not her crib thankfully but that is something to take into consideration when looking for your next home. How is this house laid out? Where will the kids go is the shower going to wake them up if has to leave at four o'clock in the morning to go to work? There are lots of things to think about in the tiny kitchen, no cabinet space, no countertop space.

I would love to hear what your largest complaints are when it comes to your house but those were some things that I found interesting. I think a pantry changes people's lives too and I'm one of those people that does not have appliances on the counters besides like super big ones that we use every day. Even like the toaster and blenders and stuff like that. It all goes away nothing should be on the counters in my mind but if you don't have a pantry, it is so much harder to accommodate that.

So the next thing I asked was, what is your favorite part about your house? Pantry was a big one on this list, the kitchen and the pool were the next big things, and I think that's where most people spend their time with families and so on. So you know, if you have those things and can have them to your liking, it's going to be the best part about your house because of where you're spending most of your time. The neighborhood and location were a big one the house might not be as desirable as some people would like but they said the location in the neighborhood was one of the best parts. One person did say that they liked that their room was at the opposite end of the house as their kids and then another person had that as their complaint. So I think it depends on your personality and what age your kids are too. Then two people said that the pros of their house were the coziness. I think that's an interesting take you know, especially if you are an empty nester or have one kid you don't want a ton of space, you don't need 3,500 square feet, you want to feel close to your family when they're there. Other people said that their open concept was their favorite part and we're seeing kind of a trend away from that. So it'll be interesting to see what people's taste comes to in the future but I thought this was fun.

I asked if you were going to move, what would you be doing upsizing, downsizing, looking for more land, or looking for a better neighborhood, or area? So 47 said that they would be upsizing their house, 40 said they would be looking for more land, 10 said looking for a better area, and then three percent said downsizing. Very interesting. There is a lot to take into consideration when looking for a home, how long will you live there realistically, and what will your family look like then? If you have teenagers, are they going to be gone and you're going to be stuck with a ton of space? If you have one kid, and you're planning to have four more, are you gonna have enough room for those kids?

There's a lot to ask yourself. If you're older, are you going to be buying a house with a lot of stairs? Probably not because it's not going to be very convenient in the long run but those are things that your realtor will be able to help advise you on when comes to searching for a house.

That's why I love working with my clients because then we get to know each other and what their wants and needs are and I can make sure that they find the perfect house. So if you have any questions about buying, selling, upsizing, or looking for more land, reach out to me and I would love to help you on your journey!
